Latte is one of the most popular coffee drinks around the world and definitely the most photographed one, thanks to the very popular latte art.
But there is much more about the elegance of latte than the art.
If you want to get to know more about this amazing coffee drink, and make your latte at home, this is the right place for you.
What Is Latte?
The key is in the name: “cafe latte” means “coffee milk”. As with cappuccino, there are countless varieties of the recipe. it is a very globalized drink, with countless variations on the recipe.
In Italy, many people make a latte for breakfast by simply brewing coffee in a Moka pot, heating milk on the stovetop and combining the two. This seems to be the common style – they don’t bother with foaming the milk.
Making a good Latte
A cafe latte consists of a strong espresso shot and two-thirds of frothed milk, making it a perfect combination of flavors. When made well, lattes can feel like warm hugs that wrap us in silky, sweet, coffee-flavored goodness.
Fortunately, if you want to start your mornings with a nice, warm latte, you are on the right place to learn how to do it, even if you don’t have an espresso machine.
Follow these simple steps to master your own perfect latte at home.
STEP #1. MAKE AN ESPRESSO
To make a good latte, you first need to make an espresso. It’s up to your taste to choose a single or double shot. You don’t need to have a fancy coffee machine to make it similar to your favorite coffee shop one. You can also use a mocha coffee maker if more convenient for you.
STEP #2. PREPARE A LATTE GLASS OR CUP (around 240 – 300ml)
Getting a glass or cup of coffee this size will help you to measure the ideal amount of milk that you need to pour. Pour the prepared espresso and continue with STEP #3.
STEP #3. STEAM AND WHIP THE MILK
Put your milk of choice in a frothing pitcher and steam it using your machine’s wand. If you don’t have an espresso machine with steam wand, use an electric mixer, or shake the milk in a closed container, that will make the milk consistency little bit thicker.
Unlike the milk for cappuccino, the milk for the latte should have a very little foam.
STEP #4. MAKE THE LATTE
A classic latte calls for 1/3 espresso, 2/3 steamed milk, and very little froth. Slowly pour the steamed milk in the glass or cup with the prepared espresso, making sure the froth goes out last.
While practicing and getting better, you can start playing and experimenting with latte art.

History of a Latte
Europeans have been mixing coffee and milk since at least the 17th Century. The term “caffe e latte” was first used by William Dean Howells in his 1867 essay “Italian Journeys”. At this point in history, coffee is starting to become a worldwide sensation, but the brewing methods were still very primitive as espresso machines had not been invented yet.
Because latte doesn’t refer to one specific recipe, it’s hard to pinpoint who actually invented it. Milk coffee became popular across Europe over the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with regional variations such as Germany’s Milchkaffee and France’s café au lait, made by pouring heated milk and strong coffee out of two separate pitchers, mixed to the coffee drinker’s preference.
In an average espresso bar in Italy, you can order a macchiato or cappuccino, but the caffè latte is seen as a breakfast drink to be made at home instead.
I personally enjoy a latte whenever the mood strikes me, and that can be in the morning, the middle of the day, or even in the evening if I know I’m going to be awake for a while.
